ââ¬ÅThe Daughters of the Late Colonelââ¬Â as a Modernist Work - Literature Essay Samples
During the Modern period, writers were concerned with ââ¬Å"making it new.â⬠People had been disillusioned, largely due to the devastation of the First World War, and they were fed up with the hypocrisy of Victorian society. Peopleââ¬â¢s way of looking at themselves and society had changed; they wanted address the issues that Victorians ignored, and ameliorate society. Katherine Mansfieldââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Daughters of the Late Colonelâ⬠is undoubtedly a Modernist short story. The characteristics it possesses in both form and content restrict it from belonging to any earlier literary period. The very fact that the author, Katherine Mansfield, is writing shows that this short story belongs to the Modernist period. In the past, writers have traditionally been upper-class, white males from central European cities (namely London). Mansfield, however, is an average middle-class woman from the colonies (New Zealand). Mansfield did not have to write under a manââ¬â¢s name in order to be successful. Had this story been written in an earlier period, it would not have been taken seriously unless it was thought to have been written by a man. With the Modern Period came the emergence of feminism. By the 1920s, most women had the vote; but they were still fighting for equality. Writing allowed women to prove they were equal to men. It also gave women a voice, proving they had a point of view and that it was worth listening to. This is a new development that was not achieved until Modernist times.Although this is a Modern story, written by a Modernist writer, the main characters, Constantia and Josephine are not Modern women. At the beginning of the story the way they behave makes them appear to be little girls, it is only later that we find out that theyââ¬â¢re actually quite a bit older. This is because they have had arrested development. Under the strict tyranny of their father, they have been trained like soldiers to serve him, and stay out of his w ay. They see themselves with a tremendous amount of guilt as extra expenses. They have been infantilized, because everyone expects theyââ¬â¢ll just get married and their husbands will provide for them. The Colonel symbolizes Victorian society. Now that he is dead, the girls have the freedom to do what they want. However, because of the way they have been raised, Victorianism is so ingrained in them that they do not know how to express anything different. In their fatherââ¬â¢s room, everything is covered in white sheets, representing the false fronts, or hypocrisy of Victorian society. When Josephine pulls up the blind, it ââ¬Å"flew up and the cord flew after, rolling round the blind-stick, and the little tassel tapped as if trying to get free (326).â⬠It is trying to get free from the confinements of the Victorian period. Constantia and Josephine subconsciously wish to be free too, but they must first realize that they have been prisoners. The girls are afraid to open a nything because they know it will bring about major changes, and really just want to leave everything as is. Likewise, by the end of the story, the girls have not made any progress in their own lives. As Constantiaââ¬â¢s name suggests, the girls are constant in their ways. They are afraid that their father will be angry that they have buried him; but these girls have been buried all their lives. This short story represents a precipice, after the Victorian period, and just at the very beginning of the Modern period, where there is still so much potential. The girls reach the edge of this precipice when the organ grinder comes around and the sun comes out, like a visual representation of their ââ¬Å"light-bulb moment.â⬠The epiphany is unfortunately lost in all their civilities of who will speak first; but it does present possibilities for the future. This strong symbolism/ abstraction is another aspect of the story that situates it in the Modern period. In previous periods, literary works tended to have literal meanings that were clear and easy to understand. Constantia and Josephine are not Modern women; but neither are they heroines. They are more like antiheros, seeming to be inadequate in many ways. They have not had the opportunity to do anything heroic because Modernists believed those opportunities are rare in real life. This goes along with the ââ¬Å"No more paradesâ⬠attitude that ensued after WWI. There are no words like ââ¬Å"Glory,â⬠ââ¬Å"Noble,â⬠ââ¬Å"Honour,â⬠or ââ¬Å"Heroicâ⬠used in this narrative, whereas in earlier periods, these were common words. Modernists were sick of hypocrisy. They wanted everything swept out from under the carpet, so there could be no false fronts; everything was presented as it was. Although these girls seem inadequate, the Modernists believed that it was a more realistic picture, therefore a better one.Instead of finding comfort in religion at the time of their fatherââ¬â¢ s death, when Mr. Farolles comes to visit, they describe the scene as ââ¬Å"awkward.â⬠The Victorians, and even more so, the Romantics had strong faith in God. It is only in Modern times that we get the feeling that ââ¬Å"God is dead.â⬠When Mr. Farolles asks the girls if they would like to take communion, they liken it to sitting ââ¬Å"in torture.â⬠Communion is one of the most important and revered aspects of the church, and to refer to it as torture would have been heresy in previous periods! The lack of respect for God goes along with the lack of respect for authority that ensued after the First World War. Not only do the girls not have God, but they also donââ¬â¢t have anyone else- they are alienated. As ââ¬Ëold spinstersââ¬â¢ they do not see any prospect for marriage, but neither do they see any other way of life. As unmarried women they feel like they do not fit in with the rest of society. For Modernists, however, this was inevitable, something eve ryone experiences. It showed that they were not in sync with everyone else, they were individuals. In Victorian times, fitting in was one of peopleââ¬â¢s main concerns. The fact that these girls are alienated from the rest of society and do not have faith in God shows this to be a Modernist work.Another aspect that helps to situate this literary work in the Modernist period is the meaninglessness in conversations. If you look closely to what characters are saying, very little of it is actually of any importance. In one instance, the girls are discussing Cyril, and how he was not able to come for their fatherââ¬â¢s funeral. Josephine says how it would have been nice if he could have come, and Connie replies ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢and he would have enjoyed it so,â⬠not thinking what she was saying (328).â⬠Of course Cyril would not have enjoyed a funeral; this reply is just thoughtless nonsense. The ââ¬Å"not thinking what she was sayingâ⬠part is the key, this conversat ion really doesnââ¬â¢t matter to her; she is only half listening. This is because Modernists believed that a large part of life was meaningless. In earlier writing, conversations were flawless. Someone would ask a question, and the other person would have a flawless answer, almost as if it was planned. The Modernists were concerned with things being more realistic, so by including meaninglessness in conversations, they are helping to make it so.Naturalism is another literary device that was not used before the Modern period. It was employed in an attempt to make things seem more realistic, closer to what theyââ¬â¢d be like in real life. For example, instead of just saying the girls went into their fatherââ¬â¢s room, it breaks the action down, talking of Josephine ââ¬Å"grasping the door- handle and doing her best to turn it.â⬠Nurse Andrewââ¬â¢s speech is another form of Naturalism used in this story. Not everyone speaks perfect English in real life, so by making N urse Andrews pronounce words like ââ¬Å"buttah (323)â⬠and ââ¬Å"bittah (342)â⬠it makes her speech seem more natural. Prior to the Modern period, characters would often have perfect English, and even speak with perfect rhythm. This short story is also blatantly Modern in terms of its structure. This story is told from multiple points of view. Perspectives from Connie, Josephine and Cyril are all presented. The difference in perspectives, especially between the perspective of Cyril and his Aunts is very interesting. Cyril makes everything seem so childish and ridiculous, he also makes his Aunts seem much older and more naive. The difference in perspectives reminds us that the narrator is not always reliable, and that different people can have different points of view. Prior to the Modernist period, the main type of narration was the Omniscient narrator, who was all-knowing. In Modern times, this type of narration was seen as completely unrealistic. Not only does the narr ation have multiple points of view, but it is also non-linear. In pre-Modern times, stories were told from start to finish with no jumping around; but this story contains memories and flashbacks from other periods in the girlââ¬â¢s lives. Overall, the many Modernist elements in this short story prove that it could not have been written in any period but the Modern. The female author, the lack of hero, the abstraction and symbolism, lack of respect for God/authority, alienation, Naturalism, the meaninglessness, the multiple narrators and the non-linearity are all devices that were not employed in earlier periods. Some works, especially ones written during a transitional phase, can have elements of more than one period; but Katherine Mansfieldââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Daughters of the Late Colonelâ⬠is definitely Modern.Works CitedMansfield, Katherine. The Daughters of the Late Colonel. The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women. Ed. S. Gilbert, S. Gubar. New York: W.W. Norton Co mpany Ltd., 2004. Print.

DATA WAREHOUSE ARCHITECTURE Albina Yusupova Data Warehouse Architecture The main difference between the database architecture in a standard, on-line transaction processing oriented system (usually ERP or CRM system) and a Data Warehouse is that the systemââ¬â¢s relational model is usually de-normalized into dimension and fact tables which are typical to a data warehouse database design. Please describe your objective and what you have done to date to achieve it. I choose accounting as my career way. Because I like to research and help people solving their problems. This decision just made up in last semester. I havenââ¬â¢t prepared much for it but everything I have done I treated it seriously. As my major is management, I choose some lessons that related to investment to learn. Meanwhile I read some books about investment principle and business comments on newspapers. I choose auditing as my career way. Besides, auditing will provide me an opportunity to know many different companies and industries. I am an active and easy-going girl. I would like to cooperate with people from various backgrounds. This decision is made up in last year. As my major is Business Management, I choose some lessons such as accounting, auditing and finance to learn. Meanwhile I learned three CPA courses by my self and attended the examination in Sep, 2006. The CPA certification is one of my target in the coming year. Career object My name is John. I am going to talk about my career objectives. I want to be an excellent engineer in the area of communication when I first enter in the college, even back to high school I have already dreamed of being an engineer in the worldââ¬â¢s leading companies or operators, such as Erricson, Nokia or China mobile. The main reason was that mobile phone was becoming popular those days and the mobile phone was a miracle to me. I wanted to know how such miracle happens. How did it work? Why we can talk to each other without any real connections. With such questions, I chose BUPT. I wanted to be an engineer in the communication area. I wanted to know the answers to such questions. Nowadays, I have leaned a lot in the college. I have already known how the mobile phone works. Of course, there still exist lots of details and new challenges that I do not know in this area. But basically, the mobile communication is no longer a miracle to me.Correspondingly, I have changed my opinion, changed my objective. I want to be a teacher, not the professors in universities, but an ordinary teacher in the elementary school. As it is known to all, certain remote and isolated area in china, people are still leading extraordinarily poor life. Lots of people with high education degree do not like to stay in these areas. They all want to come to the well-developed area, such as Beijing, Shaihai. Consequently, it is very short of teachers in such area, especially for those elementary schools. I think the children are innocent. They deserve the equal education opportunities. I want to bring hopes to these children. Another reason why I want to be such teachers is that I want to know the answers to the following questions: why they are so poor, due to the natural environment or the human subjective consciousness? Does education can bring any positive effect in changing such phenomenon? I want to find the answers by myself. About the objective in the coming 5-10 years, it is decided by the answers to the above questions that I am going to find. After I know the answers, I will try to find if I can do any help. If I can be any of use for those areas those children and I am qualified, I will continue to stay there and spend my lifetime to make my contributions. Else, I may come back to rejoin the communication industry, to pick up the goal that has been left. The objective I want to achieve when I first enter in this school, the engineer. I will try to reduce the cost of the communication service. Not to make more money. I want more and more people can enjoy the convenience brought by the rapid development of the technologies, especially for those poor.I also believe that people deserve the equal opportunity in enjoying the convenience brought by high techniques. Those career objectives may even can not form a clear develop path and it is also quite challenge. But, life itself is a miracle. No matter what you choose, no matter what you are going to pursue. Challenges are always there, isnââ¬â¢t? All we have to do is crossing the bridge when we come to it. Days are numbered, letââ¬â¢s fight for tomorrow. Thank you all. 5. Describe your greatest success or a situation where you exceeded your own expectation? To be honest, I failed in the college entrance examnation seven years ago, that is beyond everyoneââ¬â¢s expectation, because I am very good at studing at school, that really shocks me a lot. But I remembered my teacherââ¬â¢s words ââ¬Å" that is ok, although you failed in the starting line, but I hope you can win in the final lineâ⬠so I set a lot of goals the moment I go to college and make them come true gradually, and the greatest success I have gained by now is I have ranked NO. 1 among the whole management department of the zhejiang univertsity in the graduate admisiion examnation.

It also accesses whether these are transferable and operable in the ski clothing market. The findings indicate that while some could be applicable, others are hard to determine. Based on the report the move by TNF to have skiwear was appropriate given that it had a market share of 1.9%. S everal growth alternatives applicable to TNF as well as recommendations have been provided. Background information North Face is a manufacturing company that specializes in clothing outdoor equipment of high quality. Some of the products that have been part of its success are clothing, sleeping bags, tents, and backpacks (Mezzatesta Cook 1983, p. 743). These products are based on high quality and state- of- the art design, and this has ensured its competence and a high market share over the years. Its major market is in the U.S although the company also has operations in more than twenty oversees countries. The company also co-owns Ski wear cloth line that makes quality and affordable products. As part of its marketing strategy, the company has always believed in high quality products which are affordable to its customers with a lifetime warranty. The success of the company has been attributed to its good reputation in supplying quality products, good management team, and closer re lationship with the established distribution network. However, its skiwear line was not a success as the other products it sold, owing to the presence of stronger competitors who had specialty skiwear stores. Because of the low level of market penetration, The North Face skiwear products were ranked as having the lowest market share. The report analyses The North Face (TNF) case based on marketing knowledge so as to formulate recommendations that would be viable for future application in TNF future strategic marketing directions. Analysis Evaluation of existing competences for competitive advantage Competitive advantage is that particular unique aspect used by a company to gain a competitive edge in the market over the rest of its competitors by either offering quality products and services or through pricing (Botten 2007, p. 264). A company can also offer high prices compared with its competitors based on the quality of the products. There are different distinctive aspects that hav e placed the TNF Company at par with other companies in the market. The company has applied marketing mix as part of its marketing strategy thus gaining a competitive advantage in the market. A marketing mix is comprised of the 4ps applicable in marketing and they are price, product, distribution/place, and promotion. The company specializes in the manufacture of a variety of quality products which are durable and have a lifetime warranty (Mezzatesta Cook 1983, p.743).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? This according to Michael porterââ¬â¢s competitive model is a form of differentiation that offers a company a competitive edge (Botten 2007, p. 264). The manufacture of different products that were adaptable to different occasions made the company a success. All the products of The North Face Company had distinctive features and varieties that differentiated its products with those of the competitors, thereby offering the company a competitive advantage. The pricing of TNF products are affordable as it offers premium prices to its products. Mezzatesta and Cook (1983, p.746) note that as part of the corporate strategy the company believes in the manufacture of quality products, price them fairly and remain in the market for ever. It is also noticeable from the case that TNF manufactured quality back pack products that were sold at high prices than the competitors and still maintained its market share because of its quality products. Through price competition the company has been able to place itself ahead of its competitors. The distribution channels of the NTF were well organised and the shops were strategically placed. The positioning of the company based on the case study is well established as the company has different outlets in the US and other foreign countries. This enlarged its customer base and the market share. The company had specialized markets and through the building of specialty stores, it was able to create a brand name that was used as a competitive advantage (Mezzatesta Cook 1983, p.748). Brand name was created through the specialty shops, as they acted as the marketing strategy for the company. Correlation of TNF competences and competitive advantages to Skiwear Most of the stores that sold skiwear were specialty stores that were well established than the TNF. The assumption made by the TNF prior the introduction of the skiwear was that it would gain a market share if it introduced the products through the specialty stores it had. Based on the data, NTF was ranked 18 in the ski wear provision with a market share of 1.9% (Mezzatesta Cook 1983, p.752).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on The Nort h Face Case specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This means that although The North Face controlled the other products, the outlets that controlled the market were not TNFsââ¬â¢ stores. If the company transferred some of its competencies and competitive advantage on the ski wear operations, it would not be appropriate to set specialty stores so as to create a band name. This is because the skiwear market has no dominant brand and to gain a market share of 70% a firm requires at least 9 brands. Furthermore, the market is highly fragmented and customers have no particular brand. However, through the production of quality ski wear and apply the pricing concept of premium prices that varies through differentiation the strategy would be operable and could be used as a competitive advantage. As explained in the case, there was no specific brand that they associated themselves with and hence TNF would be the new brand. The corporate standard of TNF was to make better products, price them at return earning level, and promise that it would attract customers (Mezzatesta Cook 1983, p.743). This, coupled by the pyramid of influence, would be operable in skiwear as people belief in referrals and recommendations. This would address the product needs to different segments of the market. Examination of skiwear move The move by TNF to establish ski wear was appropriate and timely according to the given data. After analyzing the market for ski wear products, the company had a market share of1.9% despite the fact that it did not manufacture skiwear products and that most of its outlets sold skiwear. Although the company feared toppling of some of its existing stores, through the offer of skiwear to competitors, what the company needed was to position its skiwear products in the market and make a brand out of it that would be competitive like some of its products like the backpack. Given that the company did not manufacture skiwear its market entrance gave it the chance to exploit the 2% market share that existed. It could increase its market share based on the 2% share to increase its performance in the market. Evaluation of Growth alternatives Growth alternatives strategies are crucial as they propel the profits and the products market share to the next level (Hoskisson, Hitt Ireland, 2008, p.196).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The major growth strategies applicable to any organisation are the market development, product development, product penetration, and diversification (Doole Lowe 2008, p.170). The skiwear products can be propelled through different market segmentation instead of relying on a singular market. This could be achieved through product development that involves the expansion of a product line. This could be applied on skiwear where the material used, weight, and size would be improved to counter the existing market (Ansoff 1957, p.113). Through product mission, the company would concentrate on making a product that would meet the needs of customers at affordable prices. The company would also try market penetration as a way of ensuring its growth (Gessinger 2009, p183). Market penetration is a growth strategy that ensures a company penetrates already existing markets. According to Ansoff (1957, p.114) it aims at increasing the sales of product or service without the departure from the pro duct marketing strategy that was adopted during its inception. Through this growth alternative, the company either increases its volume sells or find new markets for its products. This increases the market share as well as the product usage leading to market growth in the long run. Since the skiwear products are new the company can segment the market and target these new segments that are not currently occupied by TNF. Instead of concentrating in the already existing market, it would be advisable to introduce the skiwear products to other geographically placed markets thus ensuring growth. Lastly, the company would adopt diversification strategy to ensure market growth (Baker 1998, p.77). This strategy is different from the other three because it requires the incorporation of new skills, new techniques and, new techniques (Doole Lowe 2008, p. 170). This changes the whole operational, organisational and physical structure of the firm. A distinctive break from the past business opera tions based on experience is realised Recommendations Based on the analysis of TNF and the skiwear it has emerged that there some recommendations which are important to see full success of the company. The company needs to position its skiwear products through branding that needs more than backpacking account. This would be achieved through establishment of different product and market segments as well as appropriate targeting. Instead of depending on already existing markets, the company can venture in new and more diverse markets that have not been penetrated much and establish themselves as a new brand. This would grant the company a market share that would absorb its products. The company could establish a marketing mix that was used as driving force for TNF products in establishment a market share for its skiwear products. This can be achieved through quality production, establishment of proper distribution channels, and offer of premium and affordable prices to its customers. The company can introduce specialty stores that specialize in the selling of skiwear products. Although, there exists other 5 skiwear stores with no backpacking, TNF could be the first to introduce the idea to ensure that they provide a particular product under a particular store. This could be a competitive edge for the company. The company could adopt the growth alternatives discussed in the report and incorporate them in the marketing strategy. The combination of different marketing alternatives would make it possible to gain market share and expand in terms of customer base. Conclusion The TNF is a company that specializes in the manufacture of tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and clothing wear. Its products are state- of- the art and of high quality. The competitive advantage of TNF is based on premium prices, high quality products, and organised chain of distribution as well as strategic position in different US store outlets and in other foreign countries. These could be ap plied to skiwear to ensure that it gains a market share. The alternative growth strategies that can be applied are through product development, diversification, market development and market penetration. The recommendation given can be applicable in TNF marketing strategy to propel it in a more successful direction. Reference List Ansoff, H. In this regard, analysis of the works of humanists with special focuses on their contribution to the arts shall be conducted ascertain the movement called humanism. Scholasticism pervaded much of pre-Renaissance European society. Humanism came to be as a response to the perceived insufficiency and limitations of scholastic teachings that relied too heavily on abstract thought rather than on practical experiences. The humanists proposed to educate the whole person and placed emphasis not only on intellectual achievement, but also on physical and moral development (Ehrstine and Schade, 2004; Proctor, 1998) Francescoà Petrarca,à known as Petrarch, is considered as the first great humanist. Petrarchà believedà and hoped to better the world by the study of classical literature. To promote the study of classical literature, he collected ancient texts during his travels. He studied and imitated them in Latin writings of his own, and then attempted to extend their teachings to as many other people as possible (Kreis, 2008). Aside from Petrarch, a number of scholars in Florence collected and studied ancient works, lectured about them, imitated their style, and made the city a centre of humanistic learning. Among them were Boccaccio, the scholar Niccolà ² Niccoli, and above all the Florentine government leader, Coluccio Salutati. They applied classical literary standards to everyday writing, laying a foundation for later literary development (Steele, 2009). As humanists rediscovered classical literature, subjects of sculpture were classical figures the most prominent of which is Plato. A Comparison And Contrast Between Flowers From Another World Ad Hi, Ar :: essays research papers
ENGLISH COMPARATIVE ESSAY ASSINGMENT II ââ¬ËA comparison and contrast between ââ¬Å"Flowers from another worldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Hi, are you alone?â⬠ââ¬â¢ This essay will attempt to compare and contrast two films directed by Spanish director actress Iciar Bollain. The films to be compared and contrasted are ââ¬Å"Hi, are you alone? (ââ¬Å"Hola, estas sola?â⬠) and ââ¬Å"Flowers from another worldâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Flores de otro mundoâ⬠). The most apparent reason for comparing and contrasting these two films is that both focus their attention on womenââ¬â¢s affairs and behaviours in todayââ¬â¢s Spanish society, both display similarities in their content but most important is the differences that one may find in the portrayal of women the director seems to be interested in. A) ââ¬Å"Hi, are you alone?â⬠: Trini and La Nià ±a are the same age: 20, and have the same uncomplicated way of going about things, they simply go ahead and do them. The two girls also share the lack of a mother. During their trip, they share everything, including Olaf, a Russian who knows not a word of Spanish and with whom La Nià ±a has an affair. They have a mutual letdown: Marilo. La Nià ±a finds love and loses it, finds her mother to lose her again, but also finds a friend, Trini, whom she is certainly not about to lose. This is film is regarded by many critics as an enchanting road movie about being a woman, being young, love and frienship is the first directorial work by Iciar Bollain. In this opera prima, Iciar shows her ability to direct actors, especially her two leading actresses, but it is in her handling of a story told so many times before (two girlfriends on the road has been the theme everywhere, who can forget Thelma and Louise!) and thus making look so fresh and original that her directorial t alent is revealed. She has managed to capture, not the loss of innocence, but the gaining of maturity, the moment when we learn which things we can change and which we cannot. In this film we do not find a false step since the fraternal relationship between the two young women is very cleverly constructed and transmitted to the audience. We also feel that the two leading actresses, Silke and Candela Pena are up to the level of the rest of the film. B) ââ¬Å"Flowers from another worldâ⬠: A bus load of women arrive at a bachelor ceremony in a dying Spanish village in hopes of marrying men that can support them and in some cases, their children.

King Lear vs the Stone Angel Blindness - 1504 Words
Blindness; a flaw with insight` It was once said, What you lose in blindness is the space around you, the place where you are, and without that you might not exist. You could be nowhere at all.(Kingslover) This is a quote that can relate the characters in The Stone Angel and King Lear. In the tragedy King Lear, written by William Shakespeare and in the novel The Stone Angel, written by Margaret Laurence, the term blindness has an entirely different meaning. She feels she must not only bear the pain alone, but that she cannot allow herself to be comforted by others. A matron puts her arm around her and says, Cry. Let yourself. Its the best thing. In response, Hagar remembers, I shoved her arm away. I straightened my spine and that was the hardest thing Ive ever had to do in my entire life, to stand straight then. I wouldnt cry in front of strangers, whatever it might cost me (Laurence 242) When she got home, Hagar found that she was not able to cry. The night my son died I was transformed to stone and never wept at all (243). Her pride leads her to become isolated, she never wants anyone to comfort, or help her. In addition, in the hospital Doris tells Hagar about an old friend and I never realized until this moment how cut off I am. (294), is the
